Or: Why I love making art for “stuff.”
I love creating great art for fabulous merchandise: taking average souvenirs from “meh” to “must-have.” I blame it all on Disneyland.
Growing up in Southern California, going to Disneyland became a regular thing. Any time we went, I couldn’t wait to go back to the magical theme park as soon as we left the parking lot.
I made the waiting time bearable by convincing my parents to buy me a t-shirt, magnet, bracelet, anything, that would keep those memories of Disneyland close to me until we’d go back again.
Designing merchandise for the most magical place on Earth
Little did I know that many years later I would work for The Walt Disney Company as part of a team of artists creating souvenir merchandise for its theme parks around the world. I got to create art that would help those Disney park guests bring their memories home, just like I did so many years ago.
Developing irresistible souvenir merchandise is about connecting the guests’ or customers’ emotional experience of a special destination with something tangible they can bring home to represent that experience—to tell its story. That’s at the heart of what I do. A good number of clients around the world would tell you I’m very good at it, too.
